The Xinhua News Agency was established in November 1931 as the Chinese Red News Agency. It has carried its current name since 1937.
In 1944 it began broadcasting internationally in English.

The agency also produces 400,000 words of economic information for both Chinese and foreign readers daily. In addition, it provides almost 100 news photos every day. It also produces special reports and specialised news programmes in over 130 countries.
Xinhua currently publishes some 40 types of newspapers and magazines, including the Xinhua Daily Telegraph, the Xinhua News Agency Newsletter (in English, French, Spanish, Arabic and Russian), the Reference News (daily), the Economic Information Daily, the China Securities (daily), the Shanghai Securities (daily), Sports Express (published Tuesdays), Outlook (weekly), the China Comment (fortnightly), the Globe (monthly), the Chinese Reporters (monthly), the Photography World (monthly), the Great Rural World (monthly), Securities Investment Weekly (published Tuesdays), the China Photo (quarterly), the China Yearbook (Chinese and English). The Reference News daily and The China Comment magazine have the highest circulation in China. Xinhua publishes more than 400 books a year on current affairs and politics.
